What is a tax extension?
Many people hear “extension” and think they don't have to worry about taxes until October — but that's not quite how it works.
An extension is simply IRS permission to give you more time to FILE your return. It usually moves the deadline to October 15.
⚠ Important: an extension does NOT give you more time to PAY if you owe money. If you wait until October without making a payment, you may still face penalties, interest, and IRS letters.
When does an extension make sense? When documents are still missing, when you have investments or a business and need time to organize, when you want to avoid mistakes, or when you need to review the numbers carefully. In many cases an extension is better than rushing and filing incorrectly.
Even with an extension, you can still receive your refund once the final return is filed. If you're not sure whether to extend or need to catch up on prior years, call us at 314-330-4425.
